Retrocognition Artist's Statement:

Everyone keeps asking me: so what is Retrocognition? What does it mean, JSH?

First and foremost, I just liked the sound of it.

But "Retrocognition" actually refers to a clairvoyant ability to view hidden secrets of the past - as opposed to the traditional idea of linear clairvoyance, which tends to see the future or the present. My own clairvoyance expresses itself mostly thru painting (among other means), and in a quite random and peripheral way. This makes it pretty much useless for any sort of focused purpose, so please don't come to me asking where the treasure is buried, what you did with your keys, or who shot from the grassy knoll.

I don't think of the past as something that's over and done with. Quantum physics tells us that we are actually part of a non-linear spacetime continuum in which what we call the past, the present and future are all one. Years like 1918, 1952, or even 1979 are far more real to me than any of these crummy years we've been having since the new millenium began. My meta-awareness of the past colors everything I do.

This retrocognitive concept is one that encompasses my entire life's body of work, not just this exhibit. Sometimes it manifests in obvious ways, such as the subject matter. More often than not, it may have to be sought out encoded in the fine little details, by searching the brushstrokes for meaning, as one would a Rorschach inkblot.
