Jeffrey Scott Holland follows his successful 2005
solo exhibits in NYC and Boston with a return to his
hometown: Louisville's "Retrocognition" showcases
Holland's continuing exploration of the minutiae of
human existence, this time painted on large sections
of pegboard and other unconventional materials.

Retrocognition is an obscure term that refers to a
clairvoyant ability to glimpse the unknown past.
Holland, a self-described luddite who prefers
America's past to its present, often speaks of
painting as way of extra-sensory perception, and
one might say his entire life's work has been
grounded in the unknown.

His work is primitive and grounded in his rural
childhood, yet is light-years away from the
predictably mannered affectations of what we have
come to expect from "Southern folk art". He draws
on numerous techniques to make up the crazy-quilt
that is his own instantly recognizable vision.

Recurring themes in JSH's work: appalachia, nature,
science, pop culture, Kentuckiana, literature,
religious imagery, paranormal phenomena, clowns
and circus imagery, rural scenes, nudes in unusual
settings, 20's-50's musicians placed in odd (and
often humorous) settings, food, and the unknown
mysteries scryed from staring into the late-night
abyss, deep in the heart of darkest America.
